Let’s jump into the hottest new social media updates in the month of August!

Thread’s is Meta’s text-based twitter rival!

Threads is the all new platform extension built by Instagram for Instagram users! Although threads does not intend to replace Twitter, its layout and overall intent are quite similar. Threads allows for sharing text updates and joining public conversations with your Instagram followers. The new platform allows you to connect with others over photo and video, whilst logged into your Instagram account. Threads offers a safe space to speak your mind with its generous 500 character limit and the ability to share links and photos. It even includes AI-generated photo descriptions! For those who love the video sharing side of social media, Threads gives you the opportunity to upload videos that are up to 5 minutes in length. Although this platform encourages positive and productive conversation, many are disappointed and already considering its downfall…

TikTok has welcomed an update allowing text-based posts available to all users. This new addition allows TikTok users to share a different form of content with full-screen text, music and stickers. These text-based posts can be up to 1000 characters long, accompanied by your choice of background colour, font and placement within the frame. This new sense of creativity is presented in a way that is similar to Instagram Stories’ text-only updates. Text allows all content creators across the platform to share their stories, poems and lyrics to their audience. Simply jump into the camera tool in the TikTok app and start customising your post! You have the option to include tags and hashtags to link to other elements within the app. For those users that don't already have a following, this handy addition can allow for creating eye-catching content and assist in building an dedicated audience!

This update could help our fellow YouTubers optimise the management of their channels! YouTube has already provided channel owners with various permissions controls to manage their channels effectively, however, this new update has expanded the platform's permissions. This will now enable YouTube channel owners to approve selected users to manage their channel within the main YouTube app, in addition to current access via YouTube Studio.

Say goodbye to Twitter’s blue branding, hummingbird and the recognisible name itself. Elon Musk has decided to change Twitter’s name to “X”, along with its icon, colours and display. Musk seeks to turn the platform into an “everything” app. Twitter’s rebranding is more than just a name change, according to Musk. X.com now redirects to Twitter.com, although the social media platform still invites users to "tweet". The rebrand is another step in the company's evolution, as Musk plans to offer users a one-stop shop for many of their online needs. The original name "Twitter" no longer made sense as the company expands beyond its original purpose. An "interim X logo" will soon replace the Twitter logo. Musk has vowed to add features to the platform, and the rebranding is seen as the next stage in his vision for the company. However, it remains to be seen whether users will embrace the changes.

Instagram broadcasting is a newly introduced feature that allows users to “go live” and broadcast real-time video content to their followers on the platform. Instagram Live enables users to connect with their audience in a more immediate and interactive manner, fostering engagement and building a sense of community. To activate the feature users can simply open the Instagram app and tap on their profile picture or swipe right from their feed. At the bottom of the screen, they can select the “Live” option. Once the broadcast begins a notification will be sent to all followers, alerting them that the user is live. This update is quite interactive as it allows viewers to leave comments and react using emojis in which the broadcaster can see in real-time! Users have the option to save and share their broadcast to their IGTV once it has finished. Instagram broadcasting is a great way to connect with others because it offers a unique and immediate form of interaction and engagement!
